More Travelers Taking Off From Binghamton Airport

TOWN OF MAINE -- First-quarter passenger boardings at Greater Binghamton Airport grew 4.6 percent as Delta Air Lines expanded its schedule between the local airport and Detroit.
TOWN OF MAINE -- First-quarter passenger boardings at Greater Binghamton Airport grew 4.6 percent as Delta Air Lines expanded its schedule between the local airport and Detroit.
About 23,800 travelers used the Town of Maine airport from January through March, according to statistics released by Broome County.
Delta continues to show significant increases in passenger traffic, with growth of 28.5 percent during the period, the county said. Delta added a third round-trip flight between the local airport and Detroit in April 2010.
The three carriers serving the area airport offer 24 total flights, said Carl Beardsley Jr., Broome County Commissioner of Aviation.
Boardings on United Express flights grew 4.4 percent in the first quarter, versus the same period a year ago, according to county.
Despite a 9.9 percent drop in first-quarter passenger activity, US Airways Express remains the area's market share leader with the most boardings of the three carriers in the first quarter, the county said.
"US Airways ran into some weather issues" as winter storms caused cancellations and delays at the airline's Philadelphia hub and other hubs, causing some local travelers to use other airlines or airports, Beardsley said.
As the summer travel season approaches, the county is working to improve the aesthetics of the airport's terminal building -- a roughly $125,000 project, he said.
"Our first step in this project is replacing the flooring with new carpeting and tile in the high-traffic areas," Beardsley said. "The last time we made improvements to the building was just over a decade ago. The furnishings, like the carpeting, are really beginning to show their age."
The renovation project also will include new paint on the walls and replacement of some exterior parts on the baggage carousel, Beardsley said.
In March, the county announced the Subway restaurant at the airport added a sandwich kiosk in the departure area so travelers can more easily buy food after they have cleared the security-screening process. The restaurant is located in the prescreening area.
The kiosk is open only from 5 to 8 a.m., though hours of operation may be expanded based on customer demand, the county said.
