OWEGO — Lockheed Martin
said it delivered the 300th common cockpit
avionics suite to the U.S. Navy for the MH-
60R/S helicopter program.

The common cockpit serves as the "nerve
center" for the multimission helicopters and
is where all activity aboard the aircraft is
based, the company said.

The common cockpit underwent one of the
most demanding certification processes at
Naval Air Systems Command and is now
"the standard by which all cockpits are
judged," said Capt. Dean Peters, NAVAIR
program manager for H-60 multimission
helicopters.

Four large, flat-panel, multifunction, night-
vision compatible, color display screens
provide the aircrew with instant information
on everything from weather to weapons to
sensors, reducing workload and increasing
situational awareness, Lockheed said.

Designed and developed by Lockheed
Martin Mission Systems and Sensors in
Owego, the common cockpit avionics suite
has flown more than 334,000 flight hours
in the MH-60S and more than 39,000
hours aboard the MH-60R, the company
said.

There are 87 "Romeos" in operation and
180 "Sierras," according to Lockheed.

The Navy plans to buy 280 MH-60S and
300 MH-60R aircraft with the common
cockpit avionics suite through 2015,
Lockheed said.

In mid-January, Lockheed said it received
$360 million in production and
development contracts to support the MH-
60R fleet. The awards cover a spectrum of
systems aboard the aircraft.

Later that month, the Maritime Helicopter
Support Co., a joint venture of Lockheed
and Sikorsky Aircraft, received a $1.4
billion follow-on contract from the Navy to
continue providing logistics support for
more than 490 in-service H-60
