Westcode to add third-shift workers
8/27/2008 (Source: Press & Sun Bulletin)
TOWN OF MAINE -- Growth at Westcode Inc. continues, with the company announcing a third shift will start in October. The company said it has completed its facility expansion and doubled its work force since last August, when it reported plans to hire employees and increase manufacturing space.
The business, on Airport Road, added about 20,000 square feet to its existing 40,000-square-foot plant and now employs 130 workers with plans to hire more, including for a third shift of about 10 people, Westcode President Michael Hall said.
Job openings are mostly in manufacturing, including positions such as braziers, Hall said.
Applications will be accepted in person at the plant or by fax or mail, he said. The fax number is 766-9868. The mailing address is 2226 Airport Road, Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.
Westcode's work in the New York City area is fueling the business growth, Hall said. The company has four major HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) jobs in the region that will carry it through at least 2012. Westcode supplies the climate-control systems for subway cars and other public transportation vehicles.
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration was at the plant recently to look into a complaint filed against the company, Hall said.
"It was a very casual walk through" that didn't result in any immediate fines, he said.
OSHA said it does not comment on open or ongoing investigations, adding it has six months to complete an inspection.
Hall said OSHA found some extension cords on the plant floor and wanted some electrical boxes moved.
Everything was immediately taken care of, he said, except for OSHA's request that some Westcode employees complete a refresher course on forklift operations. That will be completed within 30 days of the inspection.
